I got asked this question in one of my workshops this week and it upset me for a number of reasons.
Firstly. Enough with the bread shaming.
I’m not sure exactly when bread became the villain of life and health but it’s delicious and everyone needs to back off. If you follow my instagram (which you should @thefoodandfitnesswiz – shameless), you’ll have heard me talk about this before. On the whole, in the average diet we lack fibre and wholegrains. A really great source of this is bread. With so many types out there why would you avoid it? If you haven’t tried rye sourdough you need fix that. (unless you have a wheat/gluten allergy. Then maybe avoid it.). Bread itself is not doing the damage. Which brings me on to my next point…
No single food is responsible for health. One food on it’s own will not lead to weight loss, weight gain or improving/destroying health. Over consumption or under consumption are the problems. Every food has a place in a healthy diet, eating a variety of different and colourful foods is the best way to ensure you’re doing your bit for your body. This includes bread. And lots of other things. ALL other things.
Replicating someone else’s diet will never bring you happiness. We like to base our decisions on what other people are doing. Looking at other people’s actions comforts us that we are doing the ‘right’ thing. This doesn’t work. We are all different. One of the areas the diet industry has failed people time and time again is a one size fits all approach.
We could all eat exactly the same things and move exactly the same way and we would still look and respond differently.
Copying someone else’s choices or following another persons ‘what I eat in a day’ will not only not bring you happiness, but it won’t necessarily bring you the results you’re looking for. If you don’t enjoy what you’re eating and what you’re doing, what’s the point? To be successful you have to find what works for you.
